This is the original 88C thermostat with the lead beads around the edge of the thermostat. On some Silver Shadow models there was no coolant gauge. The lead beads were incorporated into the thermostat design as a “fail safe”. If the car overheated and the thermostat failed or stuck closed, the lead would melt allowing some coolant to flow through
